Get Something Mind: Reflect on this profound quote from Spiderman 2 that I heard while perusing t.v. channels this week Intelligence is not a privilege it’s a gift.Use your privilege wisely.

A few nuggets I gathered from my reading of Successful Women Think Differently by Valorie Burton: She asked “What’s your Mindset?” Burton shared there are some who have “fixed mindsets” and some who have “growth mindsets”. Which one are you? Not sure? Do some soul searching and purging and find out.

Soul: In tune with another surprise visit this week, this time from my dad. He is enjoying time with his first born and grand brats in the Mid-South spring weather away from the Windy City. Although my allergies are attempting to murder me I am enjoying him as well, so are the children. I wonder who will show up next week.

Spirit: Be patient. Patience is better than strength.Proverbs 16:32

Education MattersSchool is still in. Teaching and learning should still be happening. If your kids are like my kids they are probably saying that they have no homework. Make it a point to contact the teacher, check your child’s backpack or give a pop quiz on what they should know. Remember testing time is approaching quickly. Scholars should be resting, studying and eating properly. This is a crucial and stressful time for our kids.

Reflections

I started my week with Shrek the Musical. It was amazing. Donkey truly showed his ASSet (pun intended) as a valuable cast member of the production.  Greer “Epik” Harkness, the young man who plays donkey is definitely one to watch out for. The music, costumes, set and acting were A1 from my view. Catch the performance again at ArtsFest 2014 4/5/14, 12.30 West Stage Main Tent.

Get Something   Mind: Get into a good book. Read!

A few nuggets I gathered this week were from my reading of Successful Women Think Differently by Valorie Burton.

She asked “What Brings You Joy?” and  shared “The joy of the Lord is my strength.”

Soul: Get in tune with something that feels good… Family, Friends and Leisure… Another surprise visit this week. I love my sisters. Baby girl, TY from the Chi is here by way of Houston, Texas baby!

Spirit: Find a place to sit, be quiet and be still.

Education Matters: Testing time is approaching quickly. Start making sure students are resting, studying and eating properly. This is a crucial and stressful time for our kids.

I ended my work week with some of the most amazing people in the SCS system (Ms. Carolyn Taalib-Din, Mr. Alvin Wright,  Ms. Janice Johnson and Student leaders, at the SAVE (Students Against Violence Everywhere)Rally. The extraordinary purposeful movement was infused with inspirational poetry, dance and motivational lectures about doing the right thing in the face of adversity and taking a stand against violence and bullying. Mr. Broderick C. left students and adults with three main points to ponder when understanding violence perpetrators. He contends that they are:  “Unaware of Purpose, Unaware of Danger and Unconcerned with the future.” That is how he explained the majority of the people who commit senseless violence. Barbaric, animalistic images of teens committing violence against others were projected on the screen throughout his presentation. As he elaborated he was comical at points but transitioned to a more serious manner to capture the severity of the matter. Ms. Nikki encouraged the student leaders to not entertain cyber bullying through an engaging dramatic speak. Mr. J.R. shared his story as an ex-convict/gang member and as the father of a slain daughter (gang retaliation against him) who is now a Youth Advocate. The Rally was put together by the fabulous Janice Johnson, Peer Mediation Supervisor for SCS. She is passionate about our young people and it shows in her work.

Wow WAW! What A Weekend!

Wow WAW! What an awesome weekend it has been! It started out with a star studded performance from overly energized school girls of the Richland Elementary Dance Company, featuring yours truly Little Ms. Jounree Jones. She did a beautiful ballet number teaching us the positions of ballet with her group. Then, she tapped it out in another number that dazzled the audience, well maybe just her family. I tend to be bias, she is my daughter and I am so much enjoying this journey with her. I was a calm backstage mom. Before the ballet we watched her older brother and other training life guards act out saving a life, how comical that was. I love Theater! After the recital we headed home to a house filled with family. Oh, I forgot to mention I had a surprise visit from my first baby girl/baby sister, my heart and her two children, my Niecey Pooh and Nephew. They snuck in on us. Friday Night was a Blast.

prayerbreakfast

Saturday morning started with a fantastic God-filled Prayer Breakfast hosted by Ms. Jaria Sharkey, My Leading Young Lady Founder. The Spirit of the Lord was oh so present. I was cleansed and replenished to continue his work. Oh the power of prayer! We prayed incessantly  for : families and children, the education system,  city, state and federal government, youth/family organizations and churches. Ladell Beamon was the key note speaker. My, my, my, such food for thought he left us with.

That afternoon, along with other librarians and family and friends of the memorialized I celebrated the 75-yes 75 year life of a great woman and fellow librarian. The pastor gave a great analogy of her life as it relates to the task of librarian. Of course she loved to read so perhaps her favorite book was the bible, she detested ignorance so she taught, she had an expiration date like the books she checked out, only we know when books have to be returned to the library  its rightful owner. She was only on loan to us for a lifetime of 75 years and now she is with her rightful owner for an eternity.

uniformjustice2

Saturday evening I took the boys (sons and nephews) to experience Uniform Justice, a Memphis GunDown event/play that teaches via Theatre. What an enriching production and necessary for our community, especially young black males. Thought provoking and Action evoking. Check it out today for free. http://memphisgundown.org/

Today is Sunday, and Iplan on  going to church with extended and immediate family. Then I’m going to see my God-son in Shrek. I hear he’s amazing! There goes that bias again. Come check out  Shrek the Musical under the direction of the fabulous Julie Watson. The production is at 3pm today at Ridgeway High School.  Did I mention I love Theatre! Hope to see you there.

For now spring into a good book. I picked up Successful Women Think Differently by Valorie Burton while sitting in a Walgreen’s Pharmacy awaiting an asthma pump for my oldest son who had an attack in the middle of the night. As I sat there I started to read it and could relate. So I purchased it. After the visit to the ER and Pharmacy I got home and continued reading. That was on a Wednesday night transitioning into Thursday morning, Those of you that truly know me know I still went to work that morning. Lo and behold on my way into Journee’s dance recital Friday, I was offered a leadership position with a little extra change. Look at God!
